As a wedding photographer, I consider it my responsibility to share tips for AUTHENTIC engagement photos with my couples. Look, beautiful engagement photos do not necessarily represent you as a couple or show your true personality. Believe it or not, many couples are not comfortable having their picture taken, especially the grooms. I get it. It’s not everyday that you kiss and snuggle with your partner in front of a stranger holding a big camera. This is the reason why I insist on having an engagement session with my couples before their big day! It allows us to build up the trust so they can feel comfortable in front of my camera. Every couple is unique. And it is my belief that genuine and authentic photos that tell your personality and story are the best gift I can give it to you.
Tip 1. Finding the Right Photographer
Well, the first step is finding the right photographer. This is SO IMPORTANT! When you are looking for a photographer that is going to capture your wedding day, don’t be afraid to get on a call to talk to potential photographers. Get to know them and find out if they are interested in getting to know you. Besides, you are spending thousands of dollars on someone photographing the most important day of your lives, why not taking the time to see if there’s a connection and trust between you and the photographer. Find someone who REALLY CARES about your story. Find someone who is willing to make the effort to GET TO KNOW YOU and CREATE AN EXPERIENCE for you.
For me, it feels like chemistry–that deep connection that I have with a couple. It’s this feeling of excitement when you are working with someone amazing. That’s what I feel with with Jacqueline and Ryan. We talked on Zoom and I loved how much trust they showed me throughout our conversation.
Tip 2. Choose a Theme that Reflect You as A Couple
The second tip for having authentic engagement photos is-choosing a theme that fits you. No reason to pretend to be or like things that you don’t. Own it. From the get-to-know-you questionnaire I collected from them, I know that they have a shared love for Buffalo Wild Wings. They go to Buffalo Wild Wings every Thursday for BOGO wings. So I decided that their theme would be: A Fun-Filled Buffalo Wild Wings Picnic! With the help of some of their favorite beer and snacks, they were soon racing each other through fields for donuts and laughing about how they didn’t realize that a photo shoot could be so much fun. And I absolutely love how heir genuine joy shines through in the photos.
Tip 3. Outfits Matter
It is also important to pick outfits that you will feel confident and relaxed in. Clothes really can change how you feel. Much in the same way that the theme of the shoot really impacts how comfortable you are, so will clothes! In this fall engagement photo shoot that showcases the natural beauty of Michigan, you can see that the couple made excellent choices regarding outfits that fit their personalities. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you should pull out the pajamas that you slip into after work every night, but it does mean that you should pick outfits that reflect who you are on the inside. That is an easy path to authentic engagement photos.
Tip 4. Just Have Fun ! Think of It as A Date Night
Finally, just have fun! Stop thinking about what the photos are supposed to look like and just have fun! As we met near Fenton for the engagement photos, I knew from the start that this would be a successful photo shoot full of authentic engagement photos. We had the setting, the beautiful Seven Lakes State Park. We had a theme that reflected the fun and adventurous nature of this couple. I could tell that this couple quickly forgot about the camera and the event turned into a fun date night.
I hope you these tips for authentic engagement photos are helpful for your upcoming engagement sessions with your photographer! For more authentic engagement photos, check out Megan and Nazir’s beach engagement session at Kirk Park & Rosy Mound Natural Area.
